Florence (ItalianFirenzepronounced [firentse]Old ItalianFiorenzaLatinFlorentia) is the capital city of the Italian region of Tuscany and of the province of Florence. It is the most populous city in Tuscany, with 500,000 inhabitants (1,500,000 in the metropolitan area).

The city lies on the River Arno and is known for its history and its importance in the Middle Ages and in the Renaissance, especially for its art and architecture. A centre of medieval European trade and finance and one of the richest and wealthiest cities of the time, Florence is often considered the birthplace of the Italian Renaissance; in fact, it has been called the Athens of the Middle Ages. It was long under the de facto rule of the Medici family. From 1865 to 1870 the city was also the capital of the Kingdom of Italy.

The historic centre of Florence attracts millions of tourists each year and was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1982. Florence is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful cities in the world, and its artistichistoric and cultural heritage and impact in the world remains vast up to this day. The city has also a major European impact in musicarchitectureeducationcuisinefashionphilosophyscience and religion. The historic centre of Florence contains numerous elegant piazzas, Renaissance palazziacademiesparksgardenschurchesmonasteriesmuseumsart galleries and ateliers. The city boasts a wide range of collections of art, especially those held in the Pitti Palace and the Uffizi, (which receives about 1.6 million tourists a year). Florence is arguably the last preserved Renaissance city in the world and is regarded by many as the art capital of Italy. It has been the birthplace or chosen home of many notable historical figures, such as DanteBoccaccioBotticelliNiccolò MachiavelliBrunelleschi,MichelangeloDonatelloGalileo GalileiCatherine de' MediciAntonio MeucciGuccio GucciSalvatore FerragamoRoberto Cavalli and Emilio Pucci, to name just a few.

THE CINQUE TERRE AREA:

The Cinque Terre (Italian pronunciation: [ˌtʃinkwe ˈtɛrːe]) is a rugged portion of coast on the Italian Riviera. It is in Liguria region of Italy, at the west side of  La Spezia. "The Five Lands" is composed of five villages: Monterosso al MareVernazzaCorniglia,Manarola, and Riomaggiore. The coastline, the five villages and the surrounding hillsides are all part of the Cinque Terre National Park and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Over the centuries, people have carefully built terraces on the rugged, steep landscape right up to the cliffs that overlook the sea. Part of its charm is the lack of visiblecorporate development.  The Cinque Terre area is a very popular tourist destination.

Given its location on the Mediterranean, seafood is plentiful in the local cuisine. Anchovies of Monterosso are a local specialty designated with a Protected Designation of Origin status from the European Union. The mountainsides of the Cinque Terre are heavily terraced and are used to cultivate grapes and olives. This area and the region of Liguria, are known for pesto — a sauce made from basil leaves, garlic, salt, olive oil, pine nuts and pecorino cheese. Focaccia is a particularly common locally baked bread product. Farinata is also a typical snack found in bakeries and pizzerias- essentially it is a savoury and crunchy pancake made from a base of chick-pea flour. The town of Corniglia is particularly popular for "miele di Corniglia," gelato, made from local honey.

The grapes of the Cinque Terre are used to produce two locally made wines. The Cinque Terre and the Sciachetrà are both made using Bosco, Albarola, and Vermentino grapes. Both wines are produced by the Cooperative Agricoltura di Cinque Terre (“Cinque Terre Agricultural Cooperative”), located between Manarola and Volastra.

In addition to wines, other popular local drinks include grappa, a brandy made with the pomace left from winemaking.
